JT Torres, PhD is Director of the Houston H. Harte Center for Teaching and Learning at Washington and Lee University. An award-winning educator, scholar, and educational developer, Dr. Torres supports faculty and students by helping educators cultivate meaningful relationships with content and one another. His research explores the relationship between identity, assessment, literacy, and learning, including how students use feedback, grades, writing, and classroom experiences to shape their disciplinary, professional, and social identities. He received his PhD in Educational Psychology from Washington State University, his MFA in Creative Writing from Georgia College, and his BA in English from the University of Central Florida. Prior to joining Washington and Lee, Dr. Torres served as Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at Quinnipiac University. His current work examines how artificial intelligence disrupts and expands possibilities for formative assessment in higher education. He is co-editor of How to Incorporate Equity and Justice in Your Teaching and co-author of How to Use Writing for Teaching and Learning; Teaching, Learning, and Caring in Higher Education: How to Cultivate an Interdependent Classroom; Nonviolent Response: Strategies for Responding to Student Writers; and Situated Narratives and Sacred Dance.
